We spend a lot of time in the car. We try to solve world issues with that time but the issues have gotten too big for two sisters to solve. So we often chat about trends in our industry and how we adjust to them.
Not long ago, we had a project that had us needing furniture delivery on a strict timeline. We were amazed what we could find that was available within basically a day. We got to chatting with the salesman, a salesman who had sold quality, high-end furniture his whole life. He got on his soapbox and ranted about consumers putting aside quality for instant gratification and low, low prices. He brought up an interesting thought.
He found it remarkable that his customers, often first time home buyers, are so very in-tune with the environment. They use glass or metal canisters for water…they have Tory Burch or Kate Spade reusable coffee cups. They have multiple receptacles in their kitchens for paper, plastic and glass. They even compost….yet when it comes to furniture they want a sofa for $800 or less that, according to him, will end up in a landfill in 5 years. Furniture takes up a lot of room and not sure foam or springs ever decompose..??
Don’t get us wrong, there is definitely a spot for inexpensive finds…but perhaps the furniture that makes us the most happy and gets the most use should be of a certain quality.
Take a look at a re-upholstery job we just completed…before and afters…..This furniture is about 15/20 years old..still in amazing shape….The best part is we got to select exactly the fabric we wanted.
The room’s not complete, you’ll have to check back for the final shots but until then keep this all in mind when deciding to re-upholster or buy something new…HA, we really do talk about world issues.
